Hi there, my name is Sam Daly and I play Dr. Perkins in Death in Texas. What first really drew me to the project was the script. Scott Windhauser, the writer-director is an old friend of mine. I’ve known him for over a decade now. We always sort of talked about wanting to work together and what kind of projects we could do. He called me up last year and said, “I think I got a part for you to play.”
When I read the script, I was immediately drawn to Dr. Perkins because well, first off was the first time I played a doctor, which is always something you know, I think every actor wants to play someone smarter than they are. But as stood out to me is his character who, on the surface, you might see is just somewhat of a shady doctor who’s going about his business and trying to put an extra buck in his pocket. But really, I think Dr. Perkins represents a much larger population of doctors in America and the world probably that, you know, would like to do more to help their patients and oftentimes can’t due to lack of resources.
The humanity that Ronnie brings to Billy really makes you feel for him and root for him. Even though, you know on paper, he’s not the most formidable guy. I think we all can all relate to wanting to protect our family and do anything to keep them living at all costs. Might not kill someone, but close to anything. You know, it’s really a challenging thing to do as an actor, to make someone who’s an anti-hero likable and rootable for but I don’t see how you can watch this movie and not root for Billy.
Steve Lang is amazing because he’s the most likable grumpy guy in the world. I say that out of pure love because I love him. I don’t think he’s actually that grumpy, but he can play grumpy. You know what I mean? Lara Flynn Boyle. I mean, what can I say other than she is a riot when she turns it on and when those cameras start rolling she gets more emotion out of her pinky finger than most actors do in their whole careers. Bruce Dern is, is just amazing. I love that guy. I want to hang out with him more. I’ll act with him too, but I want to hang out with him a lot.
I think you’re gonna love this movie because it has all the makings of a real modern-day Western. It’s got drama. It’s got love and loss and death. It has big twists and turns. It’s got iconic characters and actors and that guy, Dr. Perkins is fantastic! So keep your eye out for him.
